OUR STAFF
Rev. Alex Lee-Cornell
Pastor
Alex grew up in Decatur, Georgia with his mother, a Presbyterian pastor; his father, an urban planner; and his younger brother, a fellow preacher’s kid. He attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where studied sociology, Spanish, and breakfast tacos. Upon graduation, he lived in Lima, Peru for a year, as a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) for the Presbyterian Church (USA), There, he gained experience in cross-cultural, small-church ministry, but left his appendix and any illusion of his own self-sufficiency. He completed a second year as a YAV in Los Angeles, California, living with other YAVs in a Christian community house, grounded in prayer and service to one another and to the most vulnerable citizens of Los Angeles.
Alex then returned to Texas to complete the Master’s of Divinity program at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (though it does feel presumptuous to suggest that he has “mastered divinity”). As part of his coursework, he spent a summer in New Orleans as a pastoral intern at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. That summer he met his wife, Kathy, who is now also an ordained Presbyterian Church (USA) pastor and Austin Seminary graduate.
Alex and Kathy have two children, Owen and Gabe, who (besides being mischievous preacher’s kids in their own right) attend St. Paul’s Episcopal School and the LPC Weekday School. Prior to coming to LPC, Alex served St. Stephen Presbyterian Church in Houston, St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church in Richardson, TX, and most recently was the Transitional Pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Throughout his career, Alex has worked to help congregations imagine new ways to “do church” in the 21st century, emphasizing community building and neighborhood partnerships.
Alex is passionate about church potlucks, new interpretations of scripture, and working for a more just world. He also enjoys exploring all the magical culinary and cultural offerings of New Orleans, running (i.e. mainly sweating) in City Park, and spending far too much time streaming online after his children (finally) go to bed.
